    Hi Nancy,

I left a comment on the other site, but I just wanted to stop here and let you know what a marvelous job you did on the blog post. It was brilliant the way you compared the facebook generation to the “Paris” scene. I always enjoy your writing, but I think I may have outdone yourself this time! Bravo, my friend!

Great Job Nancy. I thought I would just copy my comment here as well:

Great post Nancy! I love the comparison of the lost generation and Paris with the current day. I have always thought the best literature and ideas comes from a group of people hanging out and interacting with one another. Does Facebook actually give this sort of atmosphere? I don’t think it is quite the same but it certainly can foster some good discussion and provoke some deep thinking. In that sense…it can be quite similar to the days of congregating with Fitzgerald and Hemingway et al.

I really think of C.S. Lewis and Tolkien and their cohorts hanging out in the pubs of England. These great minds came up with some amazing things together. If Facebook can foster some of those types of “gatherings” then I think it can be quite powerful.

    Nancy,

We just wanted to leave a comment on your “real” blog too!
You wrote an outstanding article… very informative and great insight as to how Facebook is not the place for a lost generation, but for one that has found themselves.

The physical “ambiance” is not the same, but we swear that sometimes people on Facebook imagine they are sitting in some quaint cafe enjoying a lovely day in Paris.

    Thanks,

What a wonderful way at looking at the social media revolution! Comparing it to Paris during a turbulent time certainly makes for a great visual image. I hope you don’t mind that I read the article on your other blog and came back and commented over here!

I have a 15 year old daughter and 27 year old daughter who are both honor students. They spend any spare time they have on Facebook, Myspace and Twitter. At first I was concerned at what it was doing to their minds, (especially the young one), but then I got a closer look at the pages and the people they are connected with. You are absolutely right. The strongest of connections can be nurtured and maintained (just as you mention about the people in Paris)on Facebook, or you can have thousands of meaningless “friends”.

My daughters have real facebook friends, and they communicate with lots and lots of them, many who would be there for them in a real pinch. I feel so good about this. So social media is a very strong tool that can very nurtured within the family structure, just like anything else, depending on the example that is set for your children I would say.

Thank you for your fantastic blog. When I landed on it I said “Now this is a gal I can come home to, you are a cut above and your writing is superb”

Comparisons tell such a powerful story. Social media is a very powerful tool, but like anything in this world, it is what we use it for that makes the difference.
